I’ve been talking, writing, texting, everything but hiring a plane to carry a banner, about how I think Virginia is going to get, at least, to bowl eligibility this fall.
Not only do I not have any of the UVA media agreeing with me, the computers have started weighing in, and their algorithms aren’t being kind, either to me or, more to the point, to Tony Elliott.
I’ll start with the ESPN Football Power Index, which ranks the ‘Hoos at #72 among the 134 teams in FBS, right there in that meaty part of the curve, not showing off, not falling behind.
Ahem.
FPI projects a 4.6-7.4 record for UVA this fall.
Next, to SP+, which has Virginia at #78, with the offense and special teams ranked 71st, and the defense ranked 79th.
SP+ doesn’t give a projected record.
I’ll say here, though, if the special teams ends up in the 70s this season, that would be a major victory, considering the 100+ finishes in each of Elliott’s first two years at UVA.
Other renderings:
- CBS has Virginia at #86. No projected record.
- ELO has us down at #108, with a projected 2-10 finish. (Yikes.)
- Stewart Mandel at The Athletic isn’t a computer, but he’s forecasting a 4-8 finish, with a 2-6 mark in the ACC.
I’m standing by what I’ve been shouting from the mountaintops since the spring, until the fourth quarter of the opener with Richmond, anyway.
