Thompson will complete his undergraduate requirements at Ohio State this summer and earn a degree in sport industry. Thompson went to Ohio State after graduating from Chicago-area Montini Catholic. His team won three state championship his first three years of high school, followed by a state runner-up finish as a senior. Thompson tied his high school record with 17 quarterback sacks as a senior and also contributed 60 tackles and a total of 35 tackles-for-loss.

As a prep player, he earned Suburban Christian Conference lineman of the year honors and also earned Chicago Tribune and Champaign News-Gazette first team all-state accolades. He was a USA Today all-Illinois selection and selected to the U.S. Under-19 national team and played in the International Bowl (vs. Canada) in Arlington, Texas.
