The University of Virginia will offer numerous events this week to honor the lives of three student athletes who were killed in a shooting three years ago.

Football players Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry were murdered on Nov. 13, 2022, at the hands of fellow student Chris Jones.

UVA honored the students earlier this year at a UVA Strong Day at Scott Stadium in September.

While the tribute with families of the slain players was nice, the $1.5 million review of the incident might provide more closure to them and the UVA community. UVA punted the release of the report, over and over, until it released two heavily redacted copies in March.

In addition to the three deaths, two other students were injured in the incident: football player Mike Hollins, and UVA student Marlee Morgan.

Jones pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated malicious wounding and five counts of use of firearm in commission of a felony.

Sentencing is scheduled for next week on Monday, Nov. 17, at 9:30 a.m., in Albemarle County Circuit Court.

Memorial events

  • Wednesday, Nov. 12, 6-8 p.m.: Lift Every Voice & Sing: The 1-15-41 Memorial Concert will be held at the Vinegar Hill Theatre, located at 220 W. Market St. A reception will follow. RSVPs are requested.
  • Thursday, Nov. 13, 1:55 p.m.: A moment of silence during the tolling of the UVA Chapel bells marking the anniversary by playing the first verse of “Amazing Grace,” followed by three chimes honoring Chandler, Davis and Perry.
  • Thursday, Nov. 13, 1:55 p.m.: Immediately following the tolling of the Chapel bells, members of the community are invited to participate in a memorial walk to the tree honoring Chandler, Davis and Perry, which was planted on the Betsy and John Casteen Arts Grounds in September 2023. The community will also be invited to sign a UVA community pledge against gun violence.
  • Thursday, Nov. 13, 6-8 p.m.: A community candlelight vigil will be hosted by members of the Class of 2026, who were first-year students at the time of the tragedy, on the Lower Lawn.
  • Community members to share personal tributes and reflections on a remembrance banner available throughout the day at events.
