UVA Baseball: Punchless ‘Hoos drop series opener at Cal, 6-1

Virginia starting pitcher Jay Woolfolk got touched up early, and the bats could only manage four hits off three Cal pitchers, in a 6-1 series-opening loss on the Left Coast on Friday night.

The loss is the third in four games in ACC play for the 14th-ranked ‘Hoos (10-6, 1-3 ACC).

Woolfolk (1-1, 3.38 ERA) allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits in five innings of work, striking out four and walking three.

Luke Hanson (.229/.339/.319, 1 HR, 7 RBIs) was 2-for-3 at the plate, and Eric Becker (.358/.423/.552, 2 HRs, 15 RBIs) was 0-for-3 with a sac fly in the fifth that scored UVA’s lone run.

Austin Turkington (3-2, 3.38 ERA) got the win for Cal (9-8, 2-2 ACC), limiting Virginia to one run on three hits in six and two-thirds innings, striking out seven and walking three.
