UVA Baseball: ‘Hoos walk off Maryland on wild pitch in ninth in 7-6 win

uva logo blue A wild ninth that saw Maryland tie the game on a passed ball ended with a walk-off wild pitch that allowed Henry Godbout to score from third, and helped #14 Virginia escape with a 7-6 win on Tuesday.

The game was played in front of a reported 4,000 paying fans at Virginia Credit Union Stadium in Fredericksburg, the home of the Fredericksburg Nationals, the Low-A affiliate of MLB’s Washington Nationals.

Maryland (8-8, 1-2 Big Ten) got a deep, if somewhat erratic, outing out of its midweek starter, Jake Yeager, who somehow held UVA (10-5, 1-2 ACC) to three runs, one earned, in five innings, despite allowing five hits and walking five.

Pitching with a 3-1 lead in the sixth, Yeager was lifted after issuing a pair of walks to Aiden Teel and Harrison Didawick.

A double-steal, an error and a two-out, two-run single from Eric Becker put up a three-spot for the ‘Hoos that put them in the lead, at 4-3, going into the late innings.

Virginia tacked two more on in the eighth on a pinch-hit two-run homer from Luke Hanson that made it 6-3.

UVA closer Ryan Osinski gave it back in the ninth, surrendering a run-scoring double to Chris Harcopian, an RBI groundout to Alex Calarco, and then Harcopian came across with the tying run on passed ball by catcher Trey Wells.

In the bottom of the ninth, Godbout led off with a single to right, was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Arroyo, then got to third on a groundout to second off the bat of Henry Ford.

Teel walked on a 3-2 pitch, bringing up Didawick, and on the first pitch of Didawick’s at-bat, a wild pitch from Maryland closer Omar Melendez allowed Godbout to score from third.

Game Notes

  • Becker’s 2-for-5, two-RBI day improves his slash line to .375/.438/.578, for an OPS of 1.016.
  • Arroyo was 1-for-3 with the sac bunt in the ninth. His slash line: .321/.391/.625, for an OPS at 1.016. Arroyo leads the squad with five homers and 18 RBIs.
  • Two guys to worry about: Didawick had 23 homers and a 1.056 OPS in 2024; this year, he has one homer and a .670 OPS. Ford had 17 homers and 1.006 OPS in 2024; this year, no homers, and an .854 OPS.
