A Virginia police officer is now in custody and being held at the Meherrin River Regional Jail on charges related to a shooting on Sunday.

Charles Aaron Stokes, 44, of Lunenburg County, was arrested without incident at a residence in the Town of Kenbridge at 6:30 p.m. Monday by special agents with Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Appomattox field office. The U.S. Marshals Service provided assistance with the arrest.

He is being held in the Alberta jail on charges of aggravated malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Stokes is a member of the Town of Kenbridge Police Department but was off duty at the time of shooting. He received a 10-year service plaque at an appreciation dinner for town employees last month.

According to VSP, law enforcement in Lunenburg County were notified of a woman shot inside her vehicle near a residence in the county. The woman drove herself to another location, where she was then taken to an area hospital. The victim’s condition is unknown, and her name has not been released.

The car Stokes initially fled in was recovered Sunday at a business in Henderson, N.C.  A second vehicle, a 2007 silver Honda Civic with Virginia plates TGL 9143, was reported stolen from the same location.

Stokes allegedly fired into the vehicle of the victim multiple times as part of a domestic incident before driving away from the scene, ditching his vehicle and stealing a second car while on the run, according to State Police.
