Art:

Senior art show on Friday, Sept. 5, at 4 p.m., in EMU’s Margaret Martin Gehman Art Gallery. Admission is free and open to the public. Contact the Visual and Communication Arts department at 540-432-4360 for more information.

 

Music:

New adult piano classes at EMU! These group classes meet once a week and are taught by Chi Nguyen. Our goal is to help bring the joy of music and all of its benefits to everyone in our community. Whether you are a complete beginner, or returning to lessons after an extended break, we would love to have you be a part of this new program. Classes are held in 7-week sessions beginning August 25 and October 20 for the fall. Music lessons are available through EMU’s Preparatory Music Program for students of all levels, ages 3 and up. Lessons are offered for violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, flute and piano with Suzuki options for most instruments. Register now for the fall semester beginning August 25! Musikgarten at EMU is now registering students for fall classes for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarten through second grade. Classes are offered at various times throughout the week. Register now for the ten-week session that begins the week of September 22. Deadline is Sept. 12. Classes will include folk songs, movement, making music with instruments, music games and more in a fun, educational environment. Misc:

Opening convocation with EMU President Loren Swartzendruber, on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 9:50 a.m., in EMU’s Lehman Auditorium. President Swartzendruber launches the year by addressing the campus community. At the close of the service will be a time of sending/blessing for the cross-cultural seminar groups departing for SE Balkans: Bulgaria, Greece & Turkey as well as the annual Shenandoah Welcome for those newly joining the EMU campus community. EMU campus movie: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Saturday, Aug. 30, at 9 p.m., and Monday, Sept. 1, at 9 p.m., and Maleficent on Friday, Sept. 5, at 9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 6 at 9 p.m., and Monday, Sept. 8, at 9 p.m., in the Suter Science Center room 106. Admission is $1.50 for EMU faculty, staff and students and $2.50 for general public. Suter Science Seminar with Sam Showalter, Phd, on Monday, Sept. 8, at 4 p.m., in EMU’s Science Center room 106. Dr. Showalter will use the “KISS” (Keep It Simple, Sir) approach to the physiology and theology of addiction, while showing, with the statistics of addiction, that we are all “Addicts.” He will reference the book “Addiction and Grace” by Dr. Gerald May, which he has found helpful in elucidating both the physiological as well as theological aspects of addiction.
