More on the Waynesboro Y online: WaynesboroYMCA.com

At the Waynesboro YMCA and within the Waynesboro and Augusta County community we serve there is a growing concern about the spread of Ebola and other enteroviruses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not view Ebola as a significant threat to the U.S. population. However, it is important that YMCAs are well informed about and equipped to respond to such public health threats.

According to the CDC, seasonal flu is a serious disease that causes illness, hospitalizations, and deaths every year in the United States. Medical experts tell us that the symptoms for Ebola and D68 can be very similar to the flu, but there are some important differences. While the flu is contagious to others before one feels unwell, Ebola is only contagious once the infected person has a high fever. Only the flu and D68 can be spread through the air.

At the Y we have a role to play in educating staff and members about these viruses so we all can stay well. Given the concerns of the public about the spread of Ebola, YMCA of the USA (Y-USA) recommends that Ys take the following steps:

  • Consult the CDC’s website for the most up-to-date information about Ebola, including signs and symptoms, transmission, prevention, etc.: http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/.
  • Learn more about Ebola in pools: http://news.poolandspa.com/can-get-ebola-swimming-pool-hot-tub/.
  • Ensure staff wash their hands regularly with soap and warm water, and are vigilant about disinfecting equipment and encouraging members to do the same. Creating and reinforcing a culture of cleanliness is fundamental to Y operations.
  • Consult with your local health department for further information.
