There’s been online chatter, apparently prompted by Google AI, about the City of Waynesboro is marketing the Nature’s Crossing Technology Center to data center developers.
I did what anybody else can just do, if they want, and emailed the city manager, Mike Hamp, who would be the one to know.
Hamp’s answer: no.
“The city is not marketing the Nature’s Crossing property to data center developers,” Hamp told me by email today.
“Generally, the city does not view data centers as a preferred use or preferred opportunity for the property. Further, while some of the utility demands of a data center might be met at the location, not all of the utility demands for a typical data center could be met at the site when completed,” Hamp said.

Before you dismiss me on the reporting here, keep in mind, I’m not inclined to carry water for the city on this or anything.
I’m the one in the local media that’s been giving the city hell over its handling of the Northrop Grumman pollution issue, read several people, including Hamp, the riot act over its handling of the Mimosa Farm controversy.
And that’s just recently.
The screenshot posted to a community Facebook page that ignited the online discussion on a data center looks to me to be a summary produced by Google AI, which isn’t as all-knowing as it’s being made out to be.
But, hey, my thinking with writing a story on this today is, we get the top city official on the record, and if in the future, it turns out that we were being misled, we at least have documentation.
