UVA alum Tyler Wilson had the best outing of his MLB career, holding the Boston Red Sox to three hits in eight scoreless innings in a 5-1 Baltimore win Thursday.
Wilson (3-5, 4.16 ERA) struck out six and walked one, throwing 100 pitches, 65 for strikes.
A two-run homer by Adam Jones (.245/.294/.448) put the Orioles (38-27) on top to stay. Jones was 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs on the night.
It was a Jones RBI double in the fourth that pushed the lead to 3-0. A pair of run-scoring hits in the fifth, by Chris Davis (.226/.345/.483) and Jonathan Schoop (.268/.298/.464) pushed the lead to 5-0.
David Ortiz hit a homer off O’s reliever Brad Brach with two outs in the ninth to break up the shutout.
Manny Machado (.308/.373/.601) had three hits for Baltimore, which retakes a one-game lead over Boston (37-28) in the American League East.
