Trump administration pulls $39M from Norfolk wind energy project

The Trump administration has terminated $679 million in what it termed in a press release “doomed” offshore wind projects, including $39 million earmarked for the City of Norfolk to turn the Fairwinds Landing marine terminal into an offshore wind logistics facility.

“Wasteful, wind projects are using resources that could otherwise go towards revitalizing America’s maritime industry,” said Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, the reality-show guy. “Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg bent over backwards to use transportation dollars for their Green New Scam agenda while ignoring the dire needs of our shipbuilding industry. Thanks to President Trump, we are prioritizing real infrastructure improvements over fantasy wind projects that cost much and offer little.”

This is all because Trump doesn’t like “windmills” because wind turbines located near one of his golf courses ruined his ocean views.

Seriously.

Dominion Energy projected that the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project, which was going to be fed into by the Fairwinds Landing facility, would generate enough energy to power up to 660,000 homes, “and it will add to our diverse energy mix, which is essential for energy security, reliability and lowering fuel costs,” according to an explainer on the project website.

U.S. Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, D-Va., and Third District Congressman Bobby Scott, a Democrat in the House, have pledged to work with “colleagues in Congress, state officials and partners in the region to urge the Trump administration to reverse its decision” on the funding.

Good luck with all of that – with the slim MAGA majorities in Congress beholden to Trump and his distaste for “windmills,” and state government, for a few more months, anyway, in control of MAGA Gov. Glenn Youngkin.

To that point …

“As Virginia’s next governor, I will build a statewide strategy to lower Virginians’ energy bills and make our Commonwealth more energy independent,” said Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic Party nominee for governor, and a former congresswoman from Northern Virginia.

“While my opponent is cheering on the White House’s attacks and downplaying the consequences for Virginia, I will never be afraid to stand up for our Commonwealth. Virginia deserves a governor whose focus is on delivering for our communities — not kowtowing to a president who is willfully unraveling our Commonwealth’s economy,” Spanberger said.
