Traffic pattern changes on Interstate 64 in Rockbridge County

Drivers using Interstate 64 in Rockbridge County near Lexington should be alert for traffic-pattern changes from Thursday, March 24, through April 2016.

These changes allow contractors to begin a new phase of work in the $12.9 million rehabilitation of the Maury River bridges. Since October 2014, I-64 between mile marker 53.3 and 55.3 has been limited to one lane in each direction, with eastbound and westbound drivers sharing the westbound bridge.

Beginning Thursday, March 24, no earlier than 2 p.m., eastbound I-64 traffic will taper to the right lane and use the newly completed eastbound bridge. Westbound traffic will be limited to a single lane on the westbound bridge, and occasional lane shifts are possible as contractors prepare to work on the bridge.

Beginning the week of April 18, westbound I-64 traffic will taper to a single lane and use a median crossover to access the eastbound side of the interstate. After crossing the bridge, westbound drivers will follow a second crossover to return to the I-64 westbound mainline. Eastbound traffic throughout the work zone will be limited to the right lane.

All work is weather permitting, and the traffic-pattern schedule is subject to change. The speed limit on I-64 through this work zone is 55 miles an hour. Final completion of the Maury River bridges project is scheduled for late 2016.
