uva basketballTop seed UVA closed the first half on a 20-3 run to create separation and coasted from there in posting an 81-45 win over #16 seed Hampton on Thursday in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament.

Virginia (27-7) advances to play Butler (22-10) on Saturday in a second-round game.

The only drama came toward the end of the first-half run when Cavaliers coach Tony Bennett stumbled to the sideline after an Anthony Gill and-one.

Bennett walked back to the locker room under his own power before the end of the first half, and said later that he was dehydrated.

The coach came back out to start the second half and coached from a chair in front of the scorer’s table in the coach’s box.

Hampton (21-11) hung around for a while, closing to 20-18 with 5:52 left in the first half on a layup by Quinton Chievous.

Malcolm Brogdon keyed an 8-0 run over the next 59 seconds with a pair of threes and a dish for a dunk by Isaiah Wilkins.

A pair of London Perrantes threes pushed the lead to 15, and Evan Nolte connected from the wing to push the lead to 37-21 with 1:41 left in the half.

unitedrentalsThe and-one by Gill had the margin at 40-21 at the break, and the game would not get closer than that in the final 20 minutes.

Gill led Virginia with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field and seven rebounds.

Perrantes had 12 on 4-of-8 shooting from three-point range to go with four assists. Brogdon had 11 points and four assists for the ‘Hoos.

Marial Shayok had 10 off the bench, hitting 4-of-6 from the field.

Virginia shot 55.2 percent from the field (32-of-58) and 48 percent from three-point range (12-of-25).

Chievous scored 17 points to lead Hampton, which shot 31.6 percent from the floor (18-of-57) and 15.8 percent from three-point range (3-of-19).
