Susan Kubany: Republicans care about immigration reform

republican-headerI am frustrated the media has failed to explain the full picture about Republicans’ desire to resolve the border crisis. Unlike the Democratic-controlled Senate – which left for their August recess without passing a single bill addressing the border situation — House Republicans passed two bills: to expedite the deportations of our newest illegal aliens, and to stop President Obama from expanding his amnesty program to more illegals.

Our very own Congressman Bob Goodlatte has gone further by introducing legislation with Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz to end Obama’s policies that have encouraged Central Americans to illegally cross our borders, and to reform the asylum process to stop abuse of our system. This bill would attempt to ensure that gang members cannot come to the United States and would, finally, allow Border Patrol agents to do their job and access federal lands along the border.

This bill may appear to be common sense – because it is. Unfortunately, the President and his cohorts, the obstructionist Senate, do not share my worldview of effective immigration enforcement.

Instead, sadly, they look no further into the future than their attempt to recruit a new group of voters, who will find themselves enslaved by an entitlement government, with a seemingly limitless milkshake tree of benefits.

Susan Kubany resides in Staunton.
