Ashley Sours Hogsett, a senior at Bryan College and the Augusta Health School of Clinical Laboratory Science, is one of five students selected from across the country to receive a $2,000 scholarship from the American Proficiency Institute. She is the first student from the Augusta Health program to receive the scholarship.

“Laboratory testing is the cornerstone for most medical decisions,” explained Daniel C. Edson, president of API. “We believe it is important to support future professionals entering this critical field of medical laboratory science.”

Hogsett, from Lyndhurst, is one of six students in the Clinical Laboratory Science program at Augusta Health. She also works as an in-patient phlebotomist at Augusta Health while completing the program. She believes the field of medical laboratory science is “an integral part of the process of providing healthcare for people who need it. Improving the efficiency of the clinical lab through continued research and advanced technology should be our goal for the future.”

Ellie Coggins, MLS (ASCP), MSHA, program director of the CLS program, recommended Hogsett for the scholarship stating, “Her concern for the patient is evident in all tasks that she performs.”

The American Proficiency Institute is one of the largest proficiency testing providers in the world, serving more than 17,000 laboratories. API offers innovative solutions and technical excellence for the proficiencies testing needs of hospital laboratories, physician offices, clinics and point-of-care testing sites.
