Students from R.E. Lee High School, Stuart Hall School and Mary Baldwin University (MBU) have partnered on a three-month-long civic education project that will culminate next Wednesday in a Model City Council meeting.
Ten Lee High students, eight MBU students and one Stuart Hall student will conduct a mock City Council meeting at 6:30 p.m., April 4 in Staunton City Council Chambers at City Hall. During the meeting, students will “vote” on six local issues.
The public is welcome to attend.
The event coincides with Virginia’s Local Government Education Week, which is observed annually during the first week of April. Local Government Education Week is an opportunity for municipalities to partner with local schools, colleges, and universities to encourage civic education and engagement among students.
The Model City Council program is part of a civic engagement project hosted by MBU’s Alpha Kappa Gamma chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national honor society for political science. The national organization provided a $580 grant to the MBU chapter for the project.
