Two Bridgewater College seniors have been elected to lead the student body for the 2012-13 academic year. Joel Francis of Woodbridge, Va., was elected president and Joshua A. Law of Staunton, Va., was selected as vice president.

Francis, a history major, is the son of Tom and Jill Francis of Woodbridge. At Bridgewater, he is a member of Phi Alpha Theta, a national history honor society. During the 2011-12 academic year, he served on the Student Senate and was a member of the college’s Strategic Planning Committee. He serves as an orientation leader and is a member of the football team.

As president, Francis said he will work with the Student Senate to create an open forum where students can voice concerns, as well as propose solutions to problems.

“I want to encourage an increased amount of student involvement in extra- and co-curricular activities,” said Francis. “The Bridgewater experience becomes a much more fulfilling one when a student is actively involved.”

Law, a business administration major, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Law of Staunton. He is a member of the Philomathes Society, Bridgewater’s scholastic honor society; Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society; and serves as president of the campus chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity.

Law said the opportunity to serve the Bridgewater community as vice president of the student body is a great honor.

“I look forward to improving the Bridgewater experience by helping new clubs get started and helping existing student organizations accomplish their goals,” said Law.

Law, who also serves as president of BC Commuters and is an orientation leader and member of Eagle Productions, said he is looking forward to working with the college’s administration, faculty and staff to ensure the voice of every student is heard.

Student government elections are held every spring and are voted on by the entire student body. Both Francis and Law say it is an honor to be elected to their position by their peers.
