A four-run Staunton third erased an early Waynesboro lead, and the unbeaten Braves held off a ninth-inning Generals rally to post a 6-5 win in Valley League action at John Moxie Memorial Stadium Thursday night.
A three-run Brad Jarreau double was the big blow early for Staunton, tying the game at 3-3, and the Braves took the lead on a wild pitch by Waynesboro starter Kevin Fagan (0-1), who gave up six runs, four earned, on six hits in four-plus innings
Down 6-3, the Generals got a run back in the sixth when Joseph Estrada scored on a Staunton error on a grounder off the bat of Ryan Gridley.
Waynesboro made it interesting in the ninth, getting a leadoff single from Gridley, then Shane Dressler reached on an error that put runners on second and third with no outs.
Gridley scored, and Dressler advanced to third, on a passed ball. With the infield in, Ryan Coale grounded to short, and Dressler was thrown out at the plate for the first out of the inning.
Stephen Pittara lined into a 4-3 double play to end it.
