Nasty weather likely played a factor in a fatal crash on Monday in Buckingham County, according to a report from Virginia State Police.

Demita Joann Jackson, 64, of Dillwyn, died at the scene.

Jackson struck the upper branches of a downed tree that was partially obstructing Constitution Road, approximately 0.2 miles north of Slate River Mill Road.

The crash occurred just after 8 p.m. on Monday night. The preliminary investigation found the accident was likely the result of low visibility and adverse weather conditions.

Jackson was the sole occupant of the vehicle. According to VSP, she lost control of her Chevrolet Equinox, ran off the right side of the road and struck another tree.

Jackson was wearing a seatbelt.

The crash remains under investigation.
