State Police have released the name of the contractor for the Virginia Department of Transportation who died while assisting a disabled motorist on Interstate 95.

Michael C. Freeland, 48, of Falls Church, died at a hospital due to injuries sustained when a passing vehicle lost control and struck him and the driver of the disabled vehicle.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 8 p.m. on Saturday night on I-95 northbound at the 151-mile marker in Prince William County.

Freeland, in his capacity of a safety service patroller contracted by VDOT, was assisting a disabled Audi on the right shoulder and travel lane of the interstate.

The driver of a Chrysler 300 sedan lost control, crossed all lanes of travel and struck Freeland and the Audi driver.

The Audi driver suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
