State Police investigating fatal Greene County crash

Chris Graham

Virginia State Police Trooper T.M. Smith II, is investigating a fatal vehicle crash in Greene County. The incident occurred at 4:30 p.m., Monday (Sept. 19), in the 200 block of Daniels Park Road in Ruckersville.

A 25-year-old woman was washing her 2002 Ford Explorer and turned away momentarily from the vehicle. Her 5-year-old daughter got into the front seat of the Explorer and unknowingly pulled the gear shift out of park and into neutral. The Explorer began rolling backwards and struck the woman’s other daughter. Despite the mother’s immediate response and efforts to pull the little girl out of the way, the 18-month-old was crushed by the vehicle.

Trooper Smith administered First Aid and CPR as soon as he arrived and the Greene County Rescue Squad continued to try and resuscitate the toddler. The child, Aeayla A. Camacho, 18 months, of Ruckersville, Va., died at the scene. Her remains have been transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination and autopsy.

The 25-year-old mother was transported to UVA Hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained from trying to rescue her infant daughter. The 5-year-old and another child inside the Explorer were not injured in the incident.

Further examination of the vehicle discovered the gear shift could easily be moved without applying the brake or turning on the vehicle. The incident remains under investigation. No charges will be filed.
