One man was killed and three others were injured in a two-vehicle crash Thursday evening in Albemarle County. At 9:41 p.m., Virginia State Police Senior Trooper S.A. Miller was called to the scene in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 at the 126 mile marker.
A 1995 Lincoln Town Car was traveling west on I-64 when it rear-ended a 2000 Subaru Outback. The impact caused the Subaru to run off the right side of the road, strike the guardrail and overturn onto its roof.
The driver of the Lincoln Town Car, Lindsey L. Copley, 25, of Richmond, Va., was not injured in the crash. Copley was wearing a seat belt. Copley was charged with reckless driving.
The driver of the Subaru, John A. Woodworth, 70, of Afton, Va., and his wife, and two other passengers were all transported to UVA Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. One of the passengers, Peter H. David, 70, of Washington, DC, died at the hospital. All four of the Subaru’s occupants were wearing seat belts.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Two drivers were injured Friday morning when their vehicles collided along Interstate 81 in Shenandoah County. The crash occurred at about 6 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-81 at the 280 mile marker.
A tractor-trailer traveling south on I-81 had run out of fuel and was stopped on the right shoulder. The tractor-trailer was properly marked while on the shoulder. As the driver was standing in front of the tractor-trailer refueling it, a southbound box truck ran off the interstate and struck the rear of the tractor-trailer. The box truck then ran down the side of the tractor-trailer, struck the trailer and overturned in the roadway.
The impact of the crash pushed the tractor-trailer forward and struck the driver. The tractor-trailer driver, Sokada Soch, 46, of California, was transported to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The driver of the box truck, Daniel J. McTiernan, 22, of Stephens City, Va., was transported to Rockingham Memorial Hospital. McTiernan was wearing a seat belt. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.
McTiernan was charged with reckless driving. Fatigue was a factor in the crash.
Trooper D.W. Burkeholder investigated the crash. All southbound lanes were re-opened to through traffic 8:45 a.m.
