At 5:42 a.m., Virginia State Police Trooper D.L. Hughes was called to the scene of a single-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 64 at the 105 mile marker in Albemarle County.

A 2001 Toyota Tacoma was traveling east on I-64 when it ran off the right side of the road and up an embankment. It then came down the embankment and began to overturn. The vehicle rolled across the eastbound lanes of I-64, went off the left side of the interstate and came to rest in the median.

Its driver, Michael F. Dritto, 60, of Stuarts Draft, Va., was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. Dritto died at the scene. He was the vehicle’s only occupant. Fatigue was a factor in the cause of the crash.

Moments after the fatal crash occurred, a separate two-vehicle crash occurred in the eastbound lanes when a car suddenly stopped to avoid the crashed Tacoma. No one was injured in this two-vehicle crash.

A tractor-trailer also suffered tire damage from debris from the two other crashes.

All eastbound lanes of I-64 were re-opened by 9:10 a.m.
