State Police | I-295 shooting results in charges for 17-year-old boy

A 17-year-old boy is in custody after a shooting incident on Interstate 295 northbound on Sunday night.

The incident allegedly took place near the 34-mile marker on I-295 at approximately 5 p.m. A Hanover County sheriff deputy was already on interstate conducting a traffic stop and observed a vehicle matching the description of a suspect from a 911 call.

When the deputy pulled onto the interstate to stop the silver BMW, the driver fled, prompting a pursuit.

The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, Henrico County Police and Virginia State Police assisted in the investigation.

The 17-year-old male has been charged with:

  • 18.2-286.1 — Shooting from a vehicle (felony)
  • 18.2-308.7 — Possession of a firearm under age 18 (misdemeanor)
  • 18.2-308.2:01(B) — Possession of a firearm by an individual not lawfully in the U.S. (felony)
  • 18.2-56.1(A) — Reckless handling of a firearm (misdemeanor)

No injuries were reported.

The incident remains under investigation.
