St. Bonaventure pulls away, tops George Mason

Shevon Thompson recorded his third double-double of the season with 17 rebounds and 14 points Wednesday night, but it was not enough as George Mason fell to St. Bonaventure, 77-58. Thompson’s double-double marked the 19th of his career.

GAME NOTES

-Mason never led in the contest, but kept the game close in the first half as the largest lead by either team was eight points by SBU with 14:04 to play. The Bonnies pulled out with a five point lead early on, but the Patriots closed the gap to one point twice before the first media timeout.
-SBU gained its largest lead of the first half on a trio of free throws from Jaylen Adams, leading 17-9 with 14:04in the period, but a 7-0 Mason spurt cut the score to 17-16 with 12:23 on the clock.
-The Bonnies would gain a seven-point advantage twice more in the first half, but the Patriots stayed close and narrowed the score to a one point ballgame following a Marquise Moore free throw with 5:58 left.
-Moore capped the first half with a field goal at 1:12 to set the halftime score at 37-34 in favor of the Bonnies.
-Thompson quickly came out in the second half converting a bucket for a one point contest, but SBU would use a 10-5 run to hold a 47-41 lead at the first media break at 15:25. SBU would continue to push its lead out and gain its first double-digit advantage with just under 12 minutes left in the contest.
-With 8:34 left to play, Livingston sliced the score to 58-52, bringing Mason back to a single digit deficit. It would be the closest the Patriots would come as the Bonnies built their lead out to as many as 19 points with 39 seconds to play, accounting for the final 77-58 score.

STAT BREAKDOWN

-Thompson was two rebounds shy of matching his career-high, pulling down 17 boards to go along with 14 points for a double-double. The Patriots narrowly lost the rebounding battle, 42-41.
-Otis Livingston II rounded out Mason’s players in double-figures, contributing 11 points in the contest.
-Mason finished 14-for-28 from the free throw line and 2-of-17 from three-point range. The Patriots shot 38.2 percent from the floor and finished with 32 points in the paint.
-SBU had three players finish in double-figures led by Marcus Posley with 30 points. Jaylen Adams posted 16 points followed by Denzel Gregg with 12 points.
-The Bonnies were 22-for-30 from the charity stripe paced by Posley’s 12-of-14 effort. SBU finished 7-for-21 from three-point range behind Adams’ three triples.

-Mason travels to Davidson on Saturday, visiting the Wildcats for a 7 p.m. contest in North Carolina.
