Spring into summer for the next Miata cruise

Yes, Virginia, there will be a spring Miata cruise – but it’ll have to wait until summer!

“You’d think we old retired people who apparently sleep until noon and then go out to eat supper at 4 p.m. would have all kinds of time and numerous options for planning another vehicular rendezvous,” said cruise planner Jim Bishop of Belmont Estates. “But . . . turns out that me and the Mrs. have special events on tap every weekend through the end of June.

“The only open date is Sunday, July 1,” Bishop noted. “This won’t suit everyone, especially being so close to the 4th of July holiday, but it’s then or no go until a fall run. So. . . if interested and it works for your schedule, circle your calendar, save the date and we’ll go shift for ourselves.”

A preliminary route has been mapped out, subject to some tweaking, depending in part on the weather that day, but again it will be around three hours duration, including stops: Port Republic Road to Rt. 340, south to Waynesboro with a refreshment stop there, then west on Rt. 250 with a short stop at Andre Viette’s Nursery if sufficient interest and favorable weather, north on Rt. 608 to Rt. 254 west, and north on Rt. 11 to Harrisonburg (alternate more scenic option: stay on Rt. 250 west to Churchville and north on Rt. 42).

As in the past, participants are asked to plan to assemble by 12:30 p.m. Sunday, July 1, at the Waterman Square Shopping Center, Rt. 33 west, for introductions, a review of the route and some rules for the road with  a 1 p.m. departure.

“Have a full tank of gas and some change in your pocket for the refreshment break,” Bishop advised.

“I propose that the cruise is a ‘go,’ rain or shine,” Bishop stated. “Last fall, for the first time, the weather really didn’t cooperate for our trek on Skyline Drive, but everyone seemed to have a good time anyway, and the sun did break through as we motored stately into New Market!”

For questions regarding the cruise, please email [email protected] or call 540-434-6208, preferably evenings.

“You can also try my cell, 435-5340, but I’ve been known to lose it for days at a time and later find it under the passenger seat of the Miata,” Bishop admitted.

“Come join in the fun, and please pass the word along to fellow Miata aficionados who may not see this announcement,” he added.
