Southeast Connector opens in Rockingham County: Traffic changes in effect

The final portion of the Southeast Connector in Rockingham County opened on July 22. Route 280 (Stone Spring Road) is now open between Route 710 (Reservoir Street) at Sentara RMH Medical Center and Route 33 east (Spotswood Trail). Rockingham County administered this construction project.

A new traffic signal is now fully operational at the Route 33 and Route 280 intersection.  Additionally travelers on Route 704 (Boyers Road) will access Route 33 using Route 280. The old intersection at Route 704 and Route 33 is permanently closed as of July 22. Signs and rumble strips have been installed on Route 704 to alert drivers of this new intersection and traffic pattern.

Motorists should use caution in this area as drivers become acquainted with these traffic pattern changes. Traffic on Route 33 will have a new traffic signal and Route 704 will have a new intersection, stop sign and turn for Route 33 access.

The Southeast Connector in Rockingham County is a four-lane divided roadway on a new location that enhances east-to-west mobility around Harrisonburg and across portions of Rockingham. The entire roadway circling the southern side of Harrisonburg was built through strong cooperative work between VDOT, the Harrisonburg City and Rockingham County, Sentara RMH Medical Center, and developers Stoneleigh LLC/Stone Port and NAI Michael.

The VDOT Staunton District serves Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties.
