Chris Graham

road-work-headerThe Virginia Department of Transportation has scheduled a single-day closure on part of South Durant Road (Route 154) in Covington for Wednesday, October 1, from 9 a.m. to about 3 p.m. This closure extends from the intersection of Thacker Avenue to the intersection of West Jackson Street/South Willis Avenue.

Motorists can use the following detours:

  • Traffic on the south side of the work zone will bear right on West Jackson Street, left on South Rayon Drive, left on West Edgemont Drive, left on South Carpenter Drive (Route 18), left on South Monroe Avenue (Route 60), left on East Chestnut Street and then left onto South Durant Road.
  • Traffic on the north side of the work zone will turn right on East Chestnut Street, right on South Monroe Avenue (Route 60), right on South Carpenter Drive (Route 18), right on West Edgemont Drive, right on South Rayon Drive, and right on West Jackson Street to return to South Durant Road.

This closure will allow crews to finish soil- and rock-boring, which could cause debris to fall on the roadway. All work is weather permitting.

The geotechnical work is part of the design process for the Durant Road project, which includes adding a sidewalk to the left side of the road and adding a pedestrian crosswalk. This project is 0.385-mile long and is located in the Thacker Avenue area.
