The UVA Softball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday on Day 2 of the Kickin’ Chicken Classic down in Myrtle Beach, highlighted by a 4-2 win over #9 Arkansas.

The ‘Hoos (3-1) also got a 4-3 win over Akron on Saturday.

On Friday, Virginia split a pair of games, getting a 5-1 win over host Coastal Carolina, after being run-ruled, 17-1, by Arkansas.

Highlights

  • Macee Eaton hit a two-run homer to key a three-run first in the win over Arkansas.
  • Courtney Layne (1-0) picked up the win in a complete-game effort, giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits, striking out seven batters with no walks.
  • Maddy Greene and Jade Hylton had RBI singles in the first in the win over Akron, and Greene got the game-winning RBI with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Eden Bigham (2-0) picked up the win in relief, striking out seven and allowing three runs on five hits in five innings of work.

Postgame: Joanna Hardin

“Arkansas is a great team, we made some adjustments early and that was great to see. Courtney Layne pitched really well. She’s worked hard the last six months, and it was great to see. Akron is gritty, and we knew watching them yesterday it would be a tough team. Eden was tough in the circle, and Maddy Greene had a couple of big RBI. It was a good team win. It’s important for us to remember not to get too high or low. It’s a long season, and we’re in it for the long haul.”
