Just as most of the snow in the Shenandoah Valley has finally melted, another storm is developing that could deliver heavy precipitation in the region.

A winter weather warning was issued Friday afternoon for possible snow in the Valley with accumulations of five inches or more.

The National Weather Service reports that heavy snow is possible from Sunday morning through late Sunday night in what it calls the Central Virginia Blue Ridge and Northern Virginia Blue Ridge.

People in Augusta County and Waynesboro received the NWS alert, as did subscribers to the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office phone app.

The warning also states that winds could gust as high as 35 miles per hour.

AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Thomas Kines said it’s a ‘tough call’ predicting this round of snow in Virginia which is expected to arrive Saturday night and likely end by 6 p.m. on Sunday.

“Higher elevations will have snow,” Kines said. “Valley areas will be near freezing, and snow will have a hard time accumulating, especially during the day.”

The worst-case scenario, Kines said, is temperatures end up below freezing for most of the storm, and the Valley could pick up several inches of snow.

“That’s not the likely scenario but one we have to keep in mind.”

Areas northeast of Richmond up to the Washington area should receive at least a couple inches of snow, with DC potentially receiving several inches. AccuWeather’s prediction map shows that Bath and Highland counties are most likely to be impacted by the storm.
