Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory

AFP

There’s blood in the water, and conservatives in the Republican Party are in feeding-frenzy mode.

Can’t blame them, really. All the polling being done these days suggests that the American public is ambivalent about where things seem to be headed – still. I say still because you can really trace this back to probably Richard Nixon. The pendulum has been swinging back and forth, back and forth, since Nixon, and here forty-plus years later we the people still have no idea as to the direction that we want to see things go.

So you have a public that doesn’t know what it wants, but is damn sure what it doesn’t want, which is more of the same. More of the same, you might remember, was the war cry of the Democrats in 2008 applied to John McCain and his curious move to embrace the failed policies of the George W. Bush Republican years, and now it’s being used, in spirit, anyway, against Democrats by this cleverly marketed Tea Party outfit.
