SMAC team records fall

Aaron JamesThe Waynesboro YMCA year round competitive swim team, SMAC, took its older swimmers to Cary, N,C., to compete in the 23rd annual YOTA-TYR Capital Classic Meet Dec. 4-6.   This was a mid-season championship meet for these athletes.

The following 12 swimmers qualified and competed in the meet: Bobby Carey (18), Norah Hunt (17), Aaron James (17), Claudia James (14), Morgan James (16), Justin Merritt (18), Jordan Miller (17), Brazil Rule (17), Charlotte Rumsey (15), Jack Vaughn (15), Kristen Wagner (13) and Keelin Wolfe (18).

Aaron James broke 2 long standing SMAC records in the 50 free and the 100 free, formerly held by Tom Woodworth. He placed 1st in the 50 free and 2nd in the 100 free and swam 5 best times in competition.  Other highlights included Jack Vaughn and Justin Merritt earning Y national cuts in the 100 breast and 200 fly respectively.  Kristen Wagner, was the high point winner for the team, scoring 55 points and swimming 7 best times.  Wagner placed 2nd in the mile, 4th in the 200 fly, 7th in the 100 fly and 8th in the 500 free.  Norah Hunt earned 6 best times, placing 3rd in the mile, 5th in the 500 free and 8th in the 200 free.  Bobby Carey swam 5 best times placing 8th in both the 500 free and the mile. In addition, the girls relay team of Hunt, Rule, Rumsey and Morgan James earned a Y nationals cut in the 200 free relay.

The younger SMAC swimmers will now compete in their mid-season championship meet in Christiansburg, Virginia.  The team will then compete in Lynchburg, followed by a meet in Clearwater, Florida.
