SMAC places eighth in Christiansburg

Ellie SchundlerThe Waynesboro YMCA year-round competitive swim team, SMAC, competed in the 2015 Swim and Tri Winter Championships in Christiansburg, Va., Dec. 11-13.

The   HOKI Winter Swim and Tri Championships is one of the largest winter invites hosted in Virginia, and attracted over 30 teams to Christiansburg, Va.  SMAC  ladies finished the meet in 4th place,  and the  boys finished 11th.  As a team, SMAC finished in 8th place over all, a huge accomplishment for the local team.

SMAC took the following 39 swimmers to the meet: Cameron Aenchbacher (8), Chloe Aldridge (7),  Nic Aldridge (12), Emma Davis (11), Alice Elkins (12), McKina Fitzgerald (16), Miles Fitzgerald (12), Emma Hill (15), Sydney Hill (10), Taylor Hubbard (15), Carson Lawhorne (11), Brianna Mason (8), Davis Mckellop (10), Paige Mckellop (9), Cameron Murie (14), Rachel Murie (12), Gabriela Niculescu (12), Mia Peifer (10), Clara Riggan (13),Maggie Riggan (16), Christian Ruszala (13), Hailey Ruszala (9), Hayden Ruszala (11), Jackson Schundler (11), Ellie Schundler  (9), Hailey Sheffield (10), Sierra Sloat (11), Skyler Sloat(6), Julia Smith (10),  Joseph Thornberry (12), Rowland Thornberry (9), Aiden Weaber (8), Anna Weaber (9), Jakiah White ((7), Jayla White (8), Ann Wissler (9), Erin Wissler (11), Sterling Wissler(8), and Ben Young (12).

 

Nine year old Ellie Schundler was the high point earner for SMAC, racking up 240 points and 10 best times. Schundler placed  in the top 4 in all 12 of her events, which included winning the 200 free, the 100 fly and the 500 free.  In addition, Jayla White, Brianna Mason, Haley Sheffield, Cameron Aenchbacher, Sydney Hill, Hailey Ruszala, Jakiah White, and Sierra Sloat all contributed heavily to the SMAC girls 4th place overall finish.

On the boys’ side, Davis Mckellop scored 211 points, earning 6 best times. Mckellop  placed in the top 4 in 10 of his events.  Teammates Sterling Wissler and  Rowland Thornberry also had strong showings in the pool.  Jackson Schundler finished the meet with a team high 12 best times.

The team will next head to Lynchburg, followed by a team travel meet to Clearwater Florida.
