SMAC hosts Fall Invitational for area swim teams

The Waynesboro Y year round competitive swim team, SMAC (Shenandoah Marlins Aquatic Club), hosted its annual Fall Invite for area swim teams from November 20-22.  Teams from Charlottesville, Staunton, Lexington and Lynchburg attended the meet.   SMAC entered 53 swimmers in the meet.  The meet was open to all age groups, but is predominately for swimmers 14 and younger.  This was the last meet before the mid-season championship meets for SMAC.  The older swimmers will head to Carey, NC to compete in the TYR Capital Classic while the younger swimmers will head to Christiansburg to swim in the Hoki Christmas Invite.

The following swimmers attended the meet: Cameron Aenchbacher (8), Nick Alrdidge (12), Chloe Aldridge (7), Logan Atkins (10), Naomi Blair (9), Emily Breeden (9), Cole Churchill (12),  Dean Dalton (7), Emma Davis (10), Regan Davis (8),  Alice Elkins (12), McKina Fitzgerald (16), Miles Fitzgerald (12), Jessica Harrop (8), Sydney Hill (10), Emma Hill (15), Taylor Hubbard (15), Kali Jones (12),  Miguel Loya (11), Brianna Mason (8), Davis McKellop (10), Page McKellop (9), Matt Mercer (13), Ryan Mercer (11), Rachel Murie (12), Cameron Murie (14), Alex Niculescu (14), Gabby Niculescu (12),  Mia Piefer (10), Clara Riggan (13), Hayden Ruszala (11), Christian Ruszala (13), Hailey Ruszala (9), Ellie Schundler (9), Jackson Schundler (11), Haley Sheffield (10), Sierra Sloat (9), Skylar Sloat (6), Julia Smith (10), Trent Snyder (8), Olivia Speicher (7), Christian Straight (6), Jack Straight (8), Joey Thornberry (12), Rowland Thornberry (9),  Anna Weaber (10), Aiden Weaber (7), Jayla White (8), Jakiah White (7), Anna Wissler (9), Erin Wissler (11), Sterling Wissler (8) and  Ben Young (12).

SMAC swam to a whopping 236 lifetime best times.  A lifetime best time is when a swimmer swims a race faster than they have ever swum that race previously.  SMAC had 19 swimmers with at least 6 lifetime best times during the meet.  The swimmers were Cameron Aenchbacher, Chloe Aldridge, Naomi Blair, Emma Davis, Sydney Hill, Miguel Loya, Briana Mason, Mia Piefer, Haley Sheffield, Sierra Sloat, Skylar Sloat, Julia Smith, Jack Straight, Anna Weaber, Jayla White, Anna Wissler, Erin Wissler, Sterling Wissler, and Ben Young.

Highlights of the meet included:  6 new SMAC Records,  records were broken by Davis McKellop in the 500, 1000 and mile freestyle for boys 10 and under and by Sterling Wissler in the 100, 200 and 500 free for the boys 8 and under;   4 swimmers qualifying for Age Group Championships in March 2016 (Haley Sheffield – 50, 100, 500 free and 50 fly, Sydney Hill – 50, 100 and 200 free, Miles Fitzgerald -50 and 500 free, and Ben Young 100 fly); 19 first pace finishes during the meet (Miles Fitzgerald –  200 free, 50 back and 500 free, Sydney Hill – 50 breast, Davis McKellop  – 9 first place finishes from 50 free – mile, breast stroke, backstroke and IM, Cameron Murie – 200 fly, Rachel Murie – 200 free, Haley Sheffield – 500 free, Skylar Sloat – 200 free and 50 Breast and Ben Young – 200 fly).

Congratulations to all the swimmers for their hard work and dedication to the sport of swimming.  The results are a direct result of the time and effort spent in the pool during practice.
