richmond flying squirrelsThe Erie SeaWolves (55-74) utilized a four-run sixth inning to take down Richmond (54-74), 5-2 on Tuesday night at Jerry Uht Park.

Richmond held a 1-0 lead through the first five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth. The Seawolves benefited from a few defensive miscues and six hits in the inning to grab the lead and end the night for starting pitcher Tyler Beede. Hunter Cole homered and Brandon Bednar collected two hits in the losing effort for Richmond.

Squirrels outfielder Hunter Cole provided an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Cole drilled a solo home run with two outs off of Erie’s starting pitcher Josh Turley. Cole’s homer was his 13th of the season, tying him with Ryder Jones for the team lead. Unfortunately for the Flying Squirrels, that was the only run they were able to produce against Turley. The lefty kept Richmond off balance throughout the night and finished with six solid innings. Turley (7-8) allowed four hits and struck out eight in the win.

The SeaWolves squandered several early opportunities to strike against Richmond’s Tyler Beede. Beede battled with his control early on and walked consecutive batters in the first inning, but picked up a double play to neutralize the threat. Beede used a pair of strikeouts in the second inning to dance around trouble and then retired the side in order in the third inning. The righty kept Erie off the board through the first five innings of the game.

Things fell apart for Richmond in the sixth. Corey Jones reached to open the inning on a ball to shortstop that was controversially ruled a base hit. Connor Harrell and Grayson Greiner followed with consecutive singles to load the bases with no one out. Beede stuck out the next hitter but walked Christin Stewart, tying the game 1-1. Beede stayed in the contest to face Kody Eaves but an infield single allowed Erie to take the lead and end the outing for Beede. Christian Jones entered and allowed a pair of RBI singles before escaping the inning. Beede (6-7) was charged with the loss and allowed four runs on seven hits. He struck out six and walked five in the outing.

Erie turned to reliever Joe Mantiply for the seventh and eighth innings. Mantiply retired all five batters he faced and righty Kurt Spomer was brought on to close out the eighth. Squirrels reliever Jose Casilla entered for the eighth and allowed a solo home run to Mike Gerber to start the inning. Gerber’s long ball gave Erie a 5-1 advantage heading into the ninth.

Richmond was able to mount a comeback in the ninth, plating a run and bringing the tying run to the plate. Chris Shaw and C.J Hinojosa started the rally with one-out base hits, forcing Erie to bring in closer Paul Voelker. Brandon Bednar singled home a run, cutting the deficit to 5-2. Voelker then walked Tyler Horan and finished the game with a ground out to earn the save
