Shenandoah University cross country and track and field coach Andy Marrocco announced Thursday the addition of Seth McGuffin as assistant coach.
McGuffin, a Waynesboro, Virginia native, comes to Shenandoah after seven years as the assistant track & field coach at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Prior to his experience at OWU, McGuffin was the head coach at ODAC rival Eastern Mennonite for five years.
“I am so happy to bring Seth on board,” Marrocco said. “His resume and experience completely impressed the search committee.
“Seth is going to be an outstanding addition to not just the cross country and track & field programs, but the athletic department and the campus community. He is an excellent coach and an even better person.”
During his tenure at the Ohio Wesleyan, McGuffin mentored 65 student-athletes that earned All-NCAC honors with 22 of those winning league championships.
Beginning in 2013, McGuffin began a run of three athletes earning Division III All-America honors in the women’s discus and the men’s decathlon. In addition to those three All-Americans, McGuffin saw his athletes qualify for the NCAA Division III national championships in men’s heptathlon and shot put as well as women’s javelin, discus and hammer throws.
During his time at the Delaware, Ohio, school, athletes broke nine school records and the women’s top 10 list was exclusively coached by McGuffin.
His talents were not limited to the track, however, as he also served as the strength & conditioning coach and the assistant volleyball coach.
“I am very excited to return home to Virginia and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference,” McGuffin said. “This is an opportunity that I could not pass up.
“I have watched Andy grow both the cross country and track & field programs and I know I can help him achieve the program goal of winning ODAC championships. We have programs that are primed to compete for titles.”
McGuffin was on staff for 10 years at Eastern Mennonite including five as the head track & field coach. In that time, he coached 39 ODAC champions and three All-Americans and saw the Royals break 27 school records. The Royals earned 60 All-ODAC citations in his 10 years and had a streak of six straight years of winning the league’s shot put championship.
In 1996, McGuffin graduated from Lynchburg College, where he was named All-America five times in the shot put and the discus. In 1994, he was the runner-up in the shot put at the 1994 NCAA Division III outdoor championship meet.
McGuffin’s 12 All-ODAC accolades includes 11 conference championships in the indoor shot put, outdoor shot put and discus. His school records in the indoor shot put, outdoor shot put, and discus still stand, and he also set school standards in the hammer and weight throw.
Now with the Hornets, McGuffin works with the cross country and track & field teams as well as serving as an assistant in athletic communications.
