Shenandoah National Park will be hosting “The Basics of Family Camping” seminar on Saturday and Sunday, July 16 -17, 2011.
A camping trip to a national park has been a long-standing tradition for many Americans. However, a lot of today’s busy families have not found an easy way to share a camping experience together. “The Basics of Family Camping” seminar is the perfect opportunity to start your own family camping tradition and create memories that last a lifetime.
“The Basics of Family Camping” is designed specifically for families who have always wanted to go camping but haven’t been sure how to get started. Join park rangers and camping experts to learn how to pitch a tent, build a campfire, plan and prepare meals, explore nature together, and how to “Leave No Trace.” Get a hands-on look at the latest in camping equipment and learn how to choose clothing and gear to suit your needs. And, of course, we won’t forget those traditional chocolate and marshmallow delicacies that will leave you wanting s’more!
Tents, cooking equipment, and food are provided. Families who have completed Family Camping seminars have been anxious to use their new-found skills, declaring: “We will continue camping as our family enjoyed it greatly. I now know what to pack, how to set up/tear down camps, entertain a family and keep them safe. Our confidence level increased.” “The intimacy of the experience made it twice as nice and we learned so very much. “The Basics of Family Camping” is $50 for one adult and child (5-15 years old) and $10 for each additional family member. The seminar fee covers camping equipment, food, and the park entrance fee. Reservations are required and space is limited. Shenandoah National Park Association members receive a 20% discount. The Shenandoah National Park Resource Seminars are designed for those who want to get to know their national park a little more personally. Seminars provide a more in-depth experience to learn from scientists, educators, and other experts about resource issues and recreational opportunities in Shenandoah National Park.
