One person is dead and two juveniles were sent to the hospital following a crash on Interstate 81 northbound in Shenandoah County Tuesday night.

Virginia State Police have not released any names and have not responded to our inquiry for additional information.

Here’s what we do know: A two-vehicle crash occurred at 6:02 p.m. at the 279 mile marker.

A Ford Explorer was travelling northbound in the left lane on Interstate 81 when it ran into a Freightliner tractor trailer that had stopped for traffic on the interstate due to a vehicle fire four miles ahead.

After impact, the Explorer spun across the right lane and ended up in the area between the interstate and the nearby on-ramp.

The driver of the Explorer was ejected from the vehicle. The driver was flown to an area hospital where they were later pronounced deceased.

Two juvenile passengers in the Explorer were transported to area hospitals to be checked out, according to VSP.

The crash remains under investigation.
