Scherzer, Murphy key Washington Nationals in win

washington nationalsMax Scherzer was dominant, Daniel Murphy, even more so, in an easy 6-1 win for the Washington Nationals over their rival New York Mets Saturday night.

First, to Scherzer (10-6, 3.03 ERA, 0.96 WHIP), who gave up a run on three hits in seven innings of work.

Scherzer struck out nine and walked two, and scored the go-ahead run in the third after working a walk from Mets starter Logan Verrett (3-6, 4.34 ERA, 1.48 WHIP).

Then, to Murphy (.349/.388/.593, 16 HR, 64 RBI), who was 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and four RBIs.

Murphy has six homers and 17 RBIs against his former team this season.

Washington (53-36) has taken two of the first three in the series with the Mets (47-40) to build a five-game lead in the National League East.

The series concludes on Sunday, with the All-Star break to follow.
