Scherzer pitches gem as Washington Nationals salvage finale

washington nationalsEvery other start, it seems, Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer seems to flirt with a no-hitter.

The Nats got that Scherzer Thursday night in a 4-0 win over Baltimore that allowed them to salvage the finale of a four-game interleague series.

Scherzer (14-7, 2.92 ERA, 0.93 WHIP) retired the first nine O’s hitters, and ended up putting in eight scoreless innings, allowing two hits, striking out 10 and walking none on just 95 pitches.

The maligned Ubaldo Jimenez (5-11, 6.62 ERA, 1.85 WHIP) availed himself well in defeat, allowing a run on five hits in six innings, striking out four.

His only blemish was a fourth-inning solo homer by Jayson Werth (.251/.347/.436, 17 HR, 56 RBI).

The Nationals (74-53) added three runs in the eighth, on a two-run double by Daniel Murphy (.346/.389/.610, 24 HR, 96 RBI) and Bryce Harper (.251/.387/.458, 22 HR, 70 RBI).

Trea Turner (.340/.363/.543, 4 HR, 20 RBI) was 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot for Washington, which has an eight-game lead on Miami in the NL East.

Baltimore (70-57) is a game back of Toronto and Boston (both 71-56) in the AL East.
