Nobody was pushing for gay marriage, either, but that didn’t stop Republicans from pushing for a constitutional amendment to ban it. Ditto now for the latest from Staunton Republican Del. Chris Saxman, who is conjuring up the idea that Virginia’s right-to-work status is under attack and promising to solve the nonissue by proposing a constitutional amendment.
“I have been very troubled by recent and increasing attacks on Virginia’s ‘right-to-work’ status,” Saxman said. “Our Commonwealth has been recognized as one of the most business-friendly states in the nation, in no small part due to our being a ‘right-to-work’ state. Our pro-business policies have meant thousands of new jobs – jobs with good benefits and salaries – for Virginia employees as businesses have relocated and been able to grow in the Commonwealth. It worries me greatly that some would jeopardize our ability to continue to attract new businesses and jobs by changing our ‘right-to-work’ policies.”
I’ve been doing web searches for the past 20 minutes to try to find evidence of these attacks, and maybe I’m missing something, but I didn’t even see anything stirring on the Virginia AFL-CIO website, much less anything of significance anywhere else.
Somebody must be running for re-election next year.
“NFIB Virginia applauds Del. Saxman for leading the fight to protect and guarantee Virginia’s status as a ‘right-to-work’ state,” said Julia Hammond, the Virginia state director for the National Federation of Independent Business. “This legislation safeguards an employee from being forced to pay union dues as a condition of employment. NFIB/Virginia will continue to fight for the constitutionally guaranteed rights of small-business employers and employees,” Hammond said.
Good news – they’re on the case.
