Ryan Vogelsong to make rehab start in Richmond Tuesday

Chris Graham

richmond-squirrelsThe Richmond Flying Squirrels, in conjunction with their parent affiliate, the San Francisco Giants, have announced that Giants’ right-hander Ryan Vogelsong will make a rehab start for the Flying Squirrels at The Diamond on Tuesday night (7/30).  Vogelsong’s start will be made against the Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) in the opener of a three-game series.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.  The rehab appearance will mark the first time a member of the Giants will appear for the Squirrels on an MLB rehab assignment.

Vogelsong, 36, revitalized his career with the Giants in 2011 and was named a National League All-Star.  He was also a key cog in the Giants’ run to their second World Series championship in three years in 2012.  He is attempting to return to the Giants’ rotation after suffering a broken hand on May 20th against the Washington Nationals.  He has made two rehab starts in the minor league thus far, including throwing 2 2/3 innings with the San Jose Giants (A+) on Friday night.

“We’re thrilled to be welcoming Ryan Vogelsong to Richmond, and are grateful to the Giants for giving this opportunity to our tremendous fans,” said Flying Squirrels’ Vice President & COO Todd “Parney” Parnell.  “We continue to greatly enjoy our partnership with the Giants and are extremely excited to do our part in the rehab process.”

Vogelsong is a veteran of nine Major League seasons and has made 190 MLB appearances with the Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Tickets for Tuesday’s game against the Portland Sea Dogs at The Diamond are available.  They can be purchased by calling (804) 359-FUNN (3866) or visiting either SquirrelsBaseball.com or the Squirrels’ ticket office at The Diamond.  Tickets are also available for the five additional games in the home stand against the Sea Dogs and New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto Blue Jays).
