Roller derby, popular in the 1940s and 1950s, enjoyed a resurgence on TV in the 1970s, then went back into hibernation.
I don’t know that it can be said to be quietly making a comeback, but my Google research tells me that there are more than 400 local leagues in operation nationwide, including here locally.
The Rocktown Rollers, based out of Harrisonburg, will be showcasing the sport later this month at Augusta Expo in Fishersville, with their annual Autumn Jam event.
The main event features the Rollers facing off with the Harrisburg Area Roller Derby squad, from Harrisburg, Pa. – not to be confused with Harrisonburg, Va.
Some people do that, so, wanted to be clear.
Two other jams are on the schedule for the Saturday, Oct. 18, show will feature an intrasquad scrimmage for the Charlottesville Roller Derby junior team, and the B teams for the Rollers and HARD.
The day starts at 1 p.m., with the A team match set for 3:30 p.m.
