An Elkton woman has been added to an advisory committee on sexual and domestic violence, according to an announcement by Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin.
Sabrina Dorman-Andrew, the co-founder and executive director of New Creation VA, will serve on the committee, under the umbrella of public safety and homeland security.
New Creation VA was selected by Youngkin, and his wife, Suzanne, for the second 2025 Spirit of Virginia Award.
It is a nonprofit organization working to counteract human trafficking – doing all in Jesus’ name, according to their website.
Dorman-Andrew operates a retail store, New Creation Shoppe, at 3051 S. Main St. in Harrisonburg, with fair trade goods from artisans around the world – many with a biblical focus. Profits from the retail establishment go toward the mission of the nonprofit which includes advocating for fairness and justice.
Earlier this month, the nonprofit broke ground on a 5,000-square-foot café and coffee shop on South Main Street in Harrisonburg that will employee women who have survived human trafficking.
“It’s not just about job creation,” Dorman-Andrew told WHSV. “It’s workforce training, certainly, but we always want to do life skills, financial literacy, things that will set women up for long-term success.”
The nonprofit sponsors prevention education programs for elementary, middle and high school students in Augusta County, Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, Shenandoah County, Williamsburg, Staunton and Waynesboro.
New Creation VA has also partnered with the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce to share survivor stories and how individuals can prevent sex trafficking at home, work and more.
The organization has also offered health and human trafficking training for continuing education credits in the healthcare field.
Dorman-Andrew previously served on a Wayne Theatre panel with Laura Swanson, the director of Break the Chain, a documentary film about survivors of sex and labor trafficking.
Other appointments
Youngkin also announced the appointment of two Chesterfield County residents to state boards: Jennifer Warshawsky was added to the E 9-1-1 Services Board and Dr. James Constans was added to the Medical Advisory Board for the Department of Motor Vehicles.
