The Wayne Theatre kicks off another season of the On Screen/In Person documentary series on Thursday, September 13, at 7 p.m. with Break the Chain. Admission is Pay What You Will.

Break the Chain, directed by Laura E. Swanson, captures the first-hand accounts of two survivors of child sex and labor trafficking.

“The Wayne Theatre is excited to bring hot topics of discussion to the table through the On Screen/In Person documentary series,” said Tracy Straight, executive director of the Wayne Theatre.

Following the screening of the film, Swanson will join other panelists to discuss the film and the topic as a whole.

Laura E. Swanson is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, professional speaker, sexual assault survivor/advocate, and human rights activist currently residing in Michigan. Her work is heavily rooted in building awareness for important, yet misrepresented, issues of social justice using a non-sensationalized and victim-centered artistic approach. Break the Chain is her second feature-length documentary film about survivors of sex and labor trafficking and has been independently produced with the help of Michigan-based task force agencies, law enforcement, shelter homes, and non-profit organizations.

Panelists joining the filmmaker on September 13 include …

  • Mark Eggeman – Virginia Department of Emergency Management
  • Sabrina Dorman-Andrew – New Creation
  • Kenny Jarels – The AWARE Foundation, Inc.

The OSIP series is designed to bring some of the best new independent American films and their respective filmmakers to communities across the mid-Atlantic region. The Wayne Theatre is the only location in Virginia selected as a host site. Other locations include Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and West Virginia.

On Screen/In Person is a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation made possible through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts. The Waynesboro screening at the Wayne Theatre is sponsored by Barger Jeutter and Scott Robertson.

Additional films in the series include Holden On (October 18), Tyrus (November 11) , Man on Fire (February 21, 2019), From the Second Wave to the Tidal Wave (March 14, 2019) and Chavela (April 24, 2019).

The Wayne Theatre is located at 521 W. Main St. in downtown Waynesboro. Advance tickets and information is available at (540) 943-9999 or www.waynetheatre.org.
