Rockingham County Fair Association to sell two log cabins

Contributors

rock fair cabinThe Rockingham County Fair Association is offering for sale two log cabins. The structures have been associated with the Fair at different locations for more than three decades.

Of the two buildings, the older cabin was utilized at the Kratzer Road location of the Fair just north of Harrisonburg until 1980. When R.R. Donnelly began construction on this site a few years later, the cabin was disassembled and placed in storage at the new Fairgrounds located on U.S. Route 11 south of Harrisonburg. The newer of the two log cabins was erected in 1983 by the Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) and is located at the current Fairgrounds.

“We are offering these log cabins to the public for two reasons,” said Fair Association General Manager Jeff Ishee. “First and foremost, we would like to see both cabins restored and utilized where best suited; secondly, we intend to use any funds raised for making further improvements on the Fairgrounds.” The Rockingham County Fair Association is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.

The older of the two log cabins is from the Kratzer Road site and is being sold as-is, where is. “This cabin was removed from the old Fairgrounds,” said Ishee. “We are unsure exactly how old it is, but we still have diagrams of how it was disassembled.” Logs and various other structural components of the cabin have been stored in a Fairgrounds facility for over 20 years.

The SWCD log cabin measures approximately 16’ x 32’ and was in use at the Fairgrounds from 1983 through 2012. “The cabin is being sold as-is, where-is,” said Ishee, who added the purchaser will be responsible for disassembly and removal of the cabin from the Fairgrounds by June 1. The Fair Association and officials with the SWCD agreed earlier this spring the cabin was no longer needed.

Both cabins may be examined by appointment during normal business hours. Call the Fairgrounds office at 540-434-0005.

The Rockingham County Fair Association is a non-profit organization that manages the Rockingham County Fair, Virginia’s premiere agricultural County Fair.  The fairgrounds are used throughout the year for a variety of events including fundraising activities, livestock shows, trade shows, exhibitions and community events.
