Members of the Milepost Zero Bicycle Club in Waynesboro will be taking part in a global event aimed at raising awareness of bike safety.

The local Ride of Silence will be an approximate six-mile bike ride originating at Waynesboro High School on May 21 at 7 p.m.

Cyclists around the world will be hitting the streets at 7 p.m. local time on the 21st to mourn bike riders who have been killed in vehicle-bicycle accidents.

Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas in 2003 after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was killed by a passing bus on an empty road.

Cyclists participating in the local ride are asked to ride no faster than 12 mph and to remain silent during the single-file ride.

Phelan is looking for as many cyclists as possible to join him in one of many locations in the US, Canada, Australia, Europe, South and Central America and the rest of the world. He can be reached at [email protected]

The website for the ride is www.rideofsilence.org

Please contact Joan Leake at 540.942.2567 for more information about the local ride.
