A meetup at Southside Plaza in Richmond could have led to deadly consequences when a man who thought he was meeting to buy a catalytic converter was instead the victim of a crime himself.
According to court documents, when the victim arrived at the plaza on Aug. 6, 2022, he met with Keith Travers, 37, of Richmond, and an accomplice, to complete the purchase. However, the duo arrived with no catalytic converter to sell.
Instead, the victim was told to hand over his wallet, keys and phone.
While the victim had a handgun on him, Travers pointed a gun at the victim’s head and told the victim “don’t lose your life over this.”
The victim turn his gun over to the accomplice, who then pointed it at the victim. The victim also turned over his wallet, car keys and work cell phone. The wallet had $5,000 to $6,000 in it. The accomplice drove off in the victim’s car, and Travers left in the car he had driven to the carjacking.
Travers was arrested on Aug. 19, 2022, after leading Richmond Police Department officers on a pursuit for nearly an hour.
Travers plead guilty today to the carjacking. He is scheduled to be sentenced on March 20, 2024. He faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.
