Richmond claims series with Bowie on Herrera’s walkoff single

The Richmond Flying Squirrels (47-54) walked off with a, 2-1, 10-inning win over the Bowie Baysox (51-49) in front of 8,785 at The Diamond on Saturday night.  Javier Herrera delivered the game-winner, lining a single into right field that plated Ryan Lollis from second base.  The suddenly surging Squirrels have now claimed five of their last six ballgames and also earned the series win over Bowie.

Richmond righty Taylor Rogers and Bowie lefty Jake Pettit dueled in the early going.  The Baysox broke through first in the top of the third.  With one out, Kyle Hudson laid down a bunt-single.  An out later, Niuman Romero lined a double into the left-field corner.  Hudson sped around from first to score the first run of the ballgame and Bowie held a 1-0 lead.

Rogers was tremendous, working into the seventh inning, allowing just the lone run.  He didn’t factor in the decision over 6 2/3 innings.  He conceded six hits, walked two and struck three.

Meanwhile, Pettit was sensational over six shutout innings.  He allowed just two hits – both singles – walked one and struck out six.  He did not register a decision despite the strong outing.

Right-hander Oliver Drake entered in relief and struck out the side in the Richmond seventh.  However, he walked Jarrett Parker to start the eighth inning.  Juan Ciriaco singled behind the walk and Herrera bunted the runners up to second and third.  Drake delivered a wild pitch and Parker strolled in to tie the ballgame, 1-1.

Righty Cody Hall (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Squirrels, working two scoreless innings for his first Double-A victory.  He walked none and struck out three.  His performance followed right-hander Omar Javier, who followed Rogers by retiring all four batters that he faced.

Herrera’s game-winner came against Bowie right-hander Clay Schrader.  Schrader (4-2) was saddled with the loss for the Baysox.

The finale of the five-game series is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond.  Richmond LHP Chris Gloor (7-5, 3.55) will make the start against Bowie RHP Mike Wright (8-2, 3.67).  The Flying Squirrels Pregame Warmupwill begin at 1:35 p.m. on Sports Radio 910, SportsRadio910.com and IHeart Radio.
