Rhett Lashlee, who led SMU, in its first season in the ACC, to the 2024 ACC Championship Game, is the 2024 ACC Coach of the Year.

Big surprise there.

Lashlee, 29-10 in three seasons at SMU, received 64 of the 71 votes from the panel of media members and ACC head coaches.

Manny Diaz, who led Duke to a 9-3 record in his first year at that job, was a distant second, with four votes.

Lashlee worked as the offensive coordinator on Diaz’s staff at Miami for two seasons, in 2020 and 2021, before taking the job at SMU in November 2021.

Another guy hired two weeks after Lashlee was tapped to lead the SMU program didn’t get any votes.

Tony Elliott led Virginia to a 5-7 record, and the 3-5 finish in the ACC had the ‘Hoos in a tie for 10th.

Hey, the media experts had voted UVA to finish 16th in the 17-team ACC back in the summer in their preseason poll.

It was probably the six losses in seven games following the 4-1 start that did him in.

Yeah, that was it.
